A smarter approach to Fire Protection on harsh offshore environments

The Raia field is Equinor's next major deepwater development in Brazil, and with it comes the construction of a high-capacity FPSO built to withstand the tough conditions. As with any floating production unit, fire safety is crucial - particularly around risers, where flammable fluids and high pressures converge.

To meet these safety demands, we have been brought in to supply passive fire protection (PFP) systems for the riser structures in the splash zone on the Raia FPSO, working once again with our long-term customer MODEC.

Why Passive Fire Protection Matters for FPSOs

FPSOs present a unique set of fire safety challenges:

  • Hydrocarbon fire risk is high around riser systems, where critical fiowlines converge.
  • Corrosive offshore conditions demand durable, lowmaintenance protection.
  • Unplanned downtime due to fire damage can mean millions in lost production.

For operators, the key is to install fire protection systems that can be applied before arrival offshore, saving time, reducing risk, and ensuring performance. In this case, we carried out the coating at the selected Shipyard in China.

We are committed to delivering riser protection made from our unique Firestop material and engineered to withstand the challenges and environmental factors that our customer faces.

Safe, Simple, and Built to Last

By integrating our multifunctional PFP solution (Firestop) we have helped to ensure:

  • Reliable fire resistance
  • Protection against corrosion
  • Protection against wear and tear in
  • harsh environment
  • No- maintenance requirements

As FPSO projects grow in scale and complexity, early integration of passive fire protection in the design is becoming more valuable than ever. We strive to support operators and EPCs with fire safety solutions that work from day one – wherever in the world the work gets done.
